the-great-adventurePRESENTATION IN BARCELONA
This was the first presentation of Patricia Elizabeth's work
with death
and dying in Barcelona, it took place on the 15th of February at the
Centre de Dol , a local organization that helps people in their approach to
death and in helping family and friends to deal with their mourning.
The room was filled up to about sixty people and we had
two hours "I
would like to make this meeting as profitable as possible, and as we have
a time limit, I will make the theory short and jump straight into the
practice"
" There are two conditions we need to respect in order
to open this
space. One is to understand that anything you experience in this space is
your responsibility , we only provide the tools and you use them...
secondly, this is only your experience so don't try to give an impression
to an other of your experience, you are only conditioning their experience.
So this is how the meeting introduced itself, these conditions that were
recommended are basic lines to follow in being with an other, done with
Presence and Attention. Accompany the person dying through their voyage.
After a brief round of questions to get into contact such as
"How many
people here actually know they are dying?" How many people are here because
they have recently lost a loved one?" Pat asked us all to answer
to the
question of "Why are we here tonight?" and following Pat's answer to
her own
question a few people spoke up amongst the crowd: "because of the recent
death of my mother" "to confront my fear to death" " I have always been
curious about death" " because i experienced a clinical death"...
We then proceeded to practice five minutes of the contact
exercise, so
people got together in pairs one sat in front of the other, one taking on
the role of the voyager and the other the guide, the exercise was just
being one with the other, no more than the being, one looking into the
other. Everyone got a turn to be both the voyager and the guide. After this
small exercise we had a space to exchange impressions
doubts, questions...
Through this dialogue with peoples concerns Pat demonstrated
the
guiding of a blind person as an analogy to guiding someone through their
death where you do not direct their movements, you take them where they wish
to go, your only job there is to support them and protect them from the
dangers they might encounter, using your eyes for their need.
The people in the room were very open and responsive, the
atmosphere
was alive, it was interesting to have gathered the attention of so many
people who all were willing to take a part.
Product of this meeting is a Labyrinth Readers Course taking
place in
Barcelona in Spanish in two months time.
