PLENARY SPEECHES AND CONCURRENT SESSIONS AT THE ADEC CONFERENCE March 20 - 22, 1998

Life Stories in Therapeutic Settings: Maps Into the Soul

The story as a therapeutic experience is a new and exciting approach for clinicians in
the area of illness, dying and bereavement. When we can help our clients connect with
the authenticity of their own rich, unique story, we offer them a gift as well as an
opportunity for growth. This advanced workshop will help participants: 1) identify core
life themes or "plots"; 2) understand the importance of Schema Inventories to explore
and conceptualize dreams, drawings, childhood stories and photographs; 3) help
clients find the authority in their own life story; and 4) capture life stories in imagery as
a method for decreasing anxiety and completing unfinished business. Using storytelling,
experiential exercise and video the presenter will reveal stories of loss and
transformation, encouraging you to think about your authentic story. You also will
come away from this workshop with an understanding of the importance of the
therapist as "witness" to the client's process. Participants are asked to bring an 8 1/2" x
     11" unlined journal.

Faculty: Juanita Johnson, M.A., CGT, CDE, is a master storyteller and therapist
in private practice in Norwich, NY. She has produced an award-winning video
entitled Inner Views of Grief and is featured in Who's Who of American Women.

Spirituality and Grief: Pathways and Detours Thurs 1:30-4
The life journey of spirituality often is challenged during a period of bereavement.
"How could God allow this to happen to me?" is a frequently asked question. Some
may not express specific religious language, but nevertheless share in a similar struggle
which we call the search for meaning. Distancing from one's religion or spiritual path is
an all-too-common occurrence in the life of the bereaved. In this workshop, you will
     learn how to:

     1) differentiate between spirituality and religion;

     2) listen for and hear the language of spirituality and religion;

     3) identify the place of spirituality and religion in complicated mourning; and

     4) use the model of listen/assess/care to help the bereaved connect with their personal
     spiritual resources.

This intermediate workshop also will help caregivers address their personal issues of
comfort with spiritual concerns, through interactive groups. You will be provided with
extensive resources for both professionals and the bereaved.

Faculty: Rev. Richard B. Gilbert, M.Div., FAAGC, CPBC, is the
founder/director of Connections-Spiritual Links in Valparaiso, IN. He currently is in
the doctoral program for Pastoral Psychology at Graduate Theological Foundation.

thousands of people across North America for his inspirational teaching gift. Based on

only to the intellect but to the hearts of all who hear him. Founder and director of the
Center for Loss and Life Transition in Fort Collins, CO, Dr. Wolfelt serves as an
educational consultant to hospices, hospitals, schools, universities, funeral homes and a

     Home Staffs.

Jeanne M. Harper, M.P.S.

Friday, March 20, 1998, 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
"Persevering Through Adversity: Circles of Love, Rays of Hope, Winds of Life"

The reality of the "winds of life" . . . death, illness, loss . . . cannot be changed. What
can be changed is HOW we, as caregivers, respond to the winds that enter our lives
and the lives of those we serve. "To see the pain, illness or hurt as creative
opportunities for growth was and is my choice - the lifeblood of my soul!" says
Harper. When were you melted by the "winds of life," molded by the "circles of love,"
filled with "rays of hope," used your experiences and growth to assist others? Jeanne
will take you on a journey to see and experience her thoughts, prayers, music, and
people who helped her persevere through life's adversity and determine, "If it is to be,
it is up to me - to make a difference for me, you and the world." Ms. Harper, a
psychotherapist, is President of Lakeshore Professional Counseling and Owner of
     Alpha-Omega Venture. She is a certified Death Educator and Grief Therapist;
Certified Criminal Justice Specialist; Trauma Counselor; Clinical Director of Business
n' Industry Incident Response Team; coordinator of Marinette-Menominee Youth
Suicide Prevention statewide network; and a HOPE consultant. She is the co-author
of Hurting Yourself; author of Jason's Picture and numerous chapters in edited
books including a chapter in Doka's Death & Spirituality and author of various
articles in newsletters/magazines; editor of three newsletters and a Thanatos
contributing editor. She was awarded the WI State Superintendent's Youth Suicide
Prevention Council Award in 1990 and is a recipient of ADEC Service Award.

Phyllis R. Silverman, Ph.D., LICSW

Saturday, , March 21, 1998, 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
"Promoting Competence or Treating Illness"

Dr. Phyllis R. Silverman developed the widow-to-widow concept and directed the
research project that demonstrated that the most relevant help for the bereaved comes
from other mourners like themselves. She has contributed to our understanding of
change and development as part of the grief process, and of how gender differences
affect how people cope, and to our knowledge about children in grieving families. She
is currently Professor Emerita at the MGH Institute of Health Professions and an
Associate in Social Welfare in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General
Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where she has been Co-Principal Investigator
and Project Director of the Child Bereavement Study. She has been recognized by her
alma mater, Brooklyn College and by the National Center for Death Education at Mt.
Ida College for her contributions to the field. In 1995 she received ADEC's first
Research Recognition Award for her contributions to research in bereavement and
loss. To her excitement and delight she has been appointed 1998
Scholar-in-Residence at Mandlebaum House, the Jewish College at the University of
Sydney in Sydney, Australia where she will teach about death and bereavement. She
has published extensively in professional journals. Her books include: Mutual Help
Groups: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals; Mutual Help Groups:
     Organization and Development; Helping Women Cope with Grief;
Widow-to-Widow and, with Scott Campbell, Widower: When Men Are Left Alone.
With Dennis Klass and Steven Nickman she edited Continuing Bonds: New
Understanding of the Resolution of Grief. She is currently working on a new book
dealing with death in children's lives, to be published by Oxford University Press in late
     1998.

The Significance of Theology and Spirituality in the Human Experience with Grief

Of the many issues presented during the human experience with grief, those involving
spirituality present some of the greatest challenges and some of the greatest
opportunities. Rev. Jemmott will identify and discuss concepts and perspectives found
useful in responding to spiritual needs in bereavement aftercare. Rev. Jemmott is
Senior Chaplain at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD and co-facilitator of "A
Time of Sharing" with The March Funeral Homes, Inc.

in the field of perinatal loss and a community leader in the movement to focus both
community concern and interdisciplinary expertise on the plight of young, bereaved
mothers. In this very special arena, her dedication and personal commitment have
created programs for education as well as support and have raised the awareness of
the medical and professional communities along with lay and religious centers of
influence. Her keynote address will illustrate unique multicultural dynamics of perinatal
loss as well as the special challenges faced by those who seek to organize and manage
